ISTG Careers day takes place in November each year and is aimed at medical students, interns and SHOs with an interest in a career in surgery. Careers day provides a platform for a trainee from each surgical specialty to outline what the training and career in their chosen specialty is really like. Aspiring or undecided surgeons can meet trainees to ask any questions they may have.
The national 'Aspiring Surgeon Research Symposium', now in its fourth year, coincides with careers day. This is a forum for medical students, interns and junior trainees to present their research, with a cash prize as first place.

Silver Scalpel Trainee Dinner takes place in May or June each year. The prestigious Silver Scalpel is awarded to a consultant trainer as recognition of significant contribution to surgical training as voted by surgical trainees.
